Callie Michaels, the teenaged daughter of famous fashion photographer, Zoey Michaels appears to have it all—a private education, designer clothing, trips to exotic places, and opportunities to meet famous people. Still, she desperately longs for the one thing she doesn’t have—her mother’s attention! Fortunately, her friends at Ridgecrest Prep keep her grounded as she makes excuses for Zoey’s unconventional lifestyle and dodges questions about her own mysterious past.

But mother-daughter tensions escalate when a work assignment foils Callie’s Christmas plans, forcing her to visit her estranged German grandparents on their small dairy farm in Deer Creek, Wisconsin. Faced with economic and cultural differences, not to mention, a generation gap the size of Europe, Callie rebels, doing everything in her power to make her stay as miserable as possible for everyone she meets. But her plan soon backfires when she experiences a series of humiliating mishaps, and just when she thinks it can’t get any worse, Zoey delivers a bomb—her assignment has been extended!

Outraged at being ditched again, Callie flees the farmhouse carrying her most prized possessions—her iPod and a copy of the latest Cosmo Girl magazine—and finds a cozy spot in the barn where she accidentally falls asleep. As time passes, a heavy snow begins to fall and her disappearance leads to a search and rescue effort, wreaking havoc throughout the community and resulting in a near fatal accident.

Plaqued by guilt and a genuine sense of compassion, Callie acknowledges the trouble she has caused and is determined to set things right—even if it means doing the unthinkable! But she made a lot of enemies since her arrival and not everyone is as quick to forgive her as she would like.
